  • * Read aloud to your children. Be very enthusiastic about the books you read.

    * Encourage your children to read to you. Even if they are unable to read the book, let them tell the story in their own words. Have them pick out words they can read.

    * Take them to libraries and book stores. Be a good "reading" example for them. Encourage them to have a reading time during each day.

    * Make sure they are "reading" books they get from the library and book stores. Some will love to pick out books, but won't read them unless encouraged.

    * Keep in mind, especially when they get into Grades 3 up, that you may need to require reading. Encouragement and motivation are still the best path, but if your children aren't reading for pleasure, you'll need to step in and change the pattern.

    * Make reading an important part/essential part of your children's daily lives.
